For many, the decision to move into an independent living community can bring a lot of anxiety.
“People are nervous about moving into any sort of home,” said Betsy Brown, sales, marketing and special projects at Bermuda Village. “The thought is: ‘This is my end game. I’m stuck here.’”
But at Bermuda Village in Winston-Salem, that narrative is being rewritten.
The team is preparing for its annual Community Day on May 15 — featuring a luau on the expansive back patio, live music, games like shuffleboard, and an ice cream truck — where staff and residents will showcase what independent living can look like when it is built around ownership, choice and continuity.
Unlike many senior living communities, Bermuda Village residents purchase their homes, ranging from studios to spacious villas, rather than rent them.
“The property becomes an asset like any other,” Brown said. “They are able to sell it or pass it on to a loved one. That brings a greater sense of independence and security.”
People arrive from across the country, often from Florida and New England, drawn by North Carolina’s temperate climate and the lure of an alternative kind of retirement lifestyle.
Bermuda Village is attached to the Bermuda Run Country Club, a 36-hole championship golf course with an Olympic-sized pool. Membership to BRCC is part of the package at Bermuda Village with nominal monthly fees.
“The location gives the Village a lovely resort feel,” Brown said. “It feels like eye candy.”
Yet the appeal goes beyond the look and amenities. Residents often point to something less tangible: stability in the people who care for them. Many staff members have been at Bermuda Village for decades.
“It feels like a community, not a different rotation of workers coming through,” Brown said.
That sense is reflected in daily life, which offers more than 25 clubs and activities — from wine appreciation and book clubs to acting, singing and bridge. There are concerts, fitness classes and even the occasional surprise event, such as a recent visit from llamas for a pop-up petting zoo.
“There is something all the time,” Brown said.
Residents also enjoy landscaped grounds featuring Japanese gardens and a koi pond, and conveniences designed to remove the burdens of home maintenance. Valet and landscaping services, 24/7 maintenance and optional dining make day-to-day living easier.
For those needing additional support, Bermuda Village offers a full continuum of care, including assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation and supportive home care — allowing residents to remain within the same community as their needs change.
Bermuda Village Community Day is on May 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. For more information, please call Bermuda Village at 336.998.6112 or visit bermudavillage.net.
