Violinist Jennifer Curtis to perform

Historic Bethabara Park will present violinist Jennifer Curtis performing live from the Gemeinhaus at 5 p.m. today, May 31, on Facebook and YouTube.

Curtis is a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble and the founder of the group Tres Americas Ensemble. She has appeared as a soloist with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in Venezuela and the Knights Chamber Orchestra; performed in Romania in honor of George Enescu, considered the country’s greatest musician; given world premieres at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York; collaborated with composer John Adams at the Library of Congress; and appeared at El Festival de las Artes Esénias in Peru and festivals worldwide.

An educator with a focus on music as humanitarian aid, Curtis has also collaborated with musical shamans of the Andes, improvised for live radio from the interior of the Amazon jungle, and taught and collaborated with Kurdish refugees in Turkey. She performs on a 1777 Vincenzo Panormo.

1 dead, 5 injured after block party shooting

GASTONIA — One person has died and five others remain injured after a shooting Saturday at a block party in this city about 20 miles west of Charlotte.

Gastonia police said they were called to the scene on Earl Lane around 1:30 a.m. .

Police said all six victims were taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Johnathan Danyell Tate Jr., 21, of Shelby died at the hospital.

The other victims suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Police said their investigation is ongoing.
