Destini Walker and Kortni Simmons have been medically disqualified from Wake Forest’s women’s basketball team, meaning their careers are finished.

Walker, a wing from Ossining, N.Y., played in nine and started seven games last season, averaging 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. But her season was cut short, in part because of an illness that caused her to be hospitalized overnight this year. Walker's medical disqualification is because she's had multiple knee surgeries.

Simmons, a guard from Spotsylvania, Va., played in 15 games last season, averaging 1.5 points. Late in the season, she was going through the concussion protocol. Her reason for medical disqualification is because she's broken a foot three times.

This news comes from the team as it prepares for its upcoming trip to Italy — the Deacons depart Sunday. Walker and Simmons won’t be with the team for the trip, but will stay in school. Both are expected to graduate in the spring.
