The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic is this weekend in downtown. If you’re going to the races — the criterium races are Saturday and the road races are Monday — here is a list of 10 riders to know.
Men's Pro Criterium
Ty Magner, Rally UHC Cycling: Magner won the men's pro criterium at the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic in 2017. It's the second season the Georgia native is racing with Rally UHC Cycling. Magner won the USA Cycling Criterium Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. in June 2018.
Cade Bickmore, Aevolo Cycling: Bickmore signed with Aevolo Cycling in October 2019. He's earned the designation of Jakroo Best Young Rider by the USA CRITS Series this season. The 21-year-old recently won the road race of the USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals in the varsity division with Marion University, which took place May 10-12 in Augusta, Ga.
Thomas Gibbons, Automatic Racing: Gibbons ranks at the top of the USA CRITS Series standings. The 29-year-old most recently finished first at the Wilmington Grand Prix while representing Automatic Racing. Gibbons beat 62 riders to claim the men's pro/Category 1 race.
Women's Pro Criterium
Samantha Schneider, CWA Racing p/b TREK: Schneider has won the past two women's pro criterium events at the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic as a member of the ISCorp Pro Cycling Team. This season, Schneider, a native of West Allis, Wis., will race with CWA Racing p/b TREK.
Starla Teddergreen, Hagens Berman-Supermint: Teddergreen is in her third season with Hagens Berman-Supermint. She is the current USA CRITS Series leader. Teddergreen finished eighth at the Cycling Classic last year.
Rebecca Wiasack, Fearless Femme Racing: Wiasack comes into the Cycling Classic having won the Austrian National Criterium Championships in January. It was her second straight year claiming the title. Wiasack, who is from Canberra, Australia, has been the team captain of Fearless Femme Racing for three years.
UCI Men's Road Race
Samuel Bassetti, Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling: Bassetti won the UCI road race last year roughly two seconds ahead of Colin Joyce, who placed first in the pro criterium. He went on to place second overall in the USA Cycling Pro Road Tour standings in 2018. Bassetti's team, Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling, placed second among teams as well.
James Piccoli, Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling: Piccoli is the current points leader within the USA Cycling Pro Road Tour standings this season. The Montreal native is a teammate of Bassetti with Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling. Currently, their team leads in standings on the road circuit with 621 points.
UCI Women's Road Race
Lily Williams, Hagens Berman-Supermint: Williams is the reigning champion of the Cycling Classic's UCI road race. It's her second season with Hagens Berman-Supermint. Williams, who lives in Asheville, has top finishes this year at races like the Sun City CRIT in El Paso, Texas. Out of the season's UCI events, Williams placed third in the fourth stage of the Joe Martin Stage Race in April.
Chloé Dygert-Owen, Sho-Air TWENTY20: Dygert-Owen is the current individual points leader within USA Cycling Pro Road Tour standings. She's coming off an appearance at the Amgen Tour of California, which ended May 18. The 22-year-old has won five gold medals at the UCI Track and Cycling World Championships.
