Three area girls basketball players and a coach highlight this year’s East-West girls all-star basketball game, announced Wednesday night by the N.C. Coaches Association.
Callie Scheier from West Forsyth won the Winston-Salem Journal’s Mary Garber Award last season as the top girls player in the Northwest after averaging nearly 23 points per game. Scheier had more than 1,700 points and 500 assists in her four years with the Titans. Scheier, who has signed to play at High Point in the fall, helped West Forsyth defeat Southeast Raleigh in the NCHSAA Class 4-A state championship in March and scored 29 points to be named MVP.
Shaunae Sawyers from Mount Airy was also named to the West roster. She finished her four-year career with the Granite Bears with 1,226 points and was named co-player of the year in the Northwest 1-A with junior Elle Sutphin of East Surry. Sawyers, who averaged 19 points and seven rebounds a game last season and also made the All-Northwest team, has signed to play at Catawba.
The third area player to be named to the West roster is Lyrik Thorne of Ledford. Thorne, who has also signed with Catawba, was named to the All-Northwest team this past season after averaging 31 points and nine rebounds per game. Thorne finished this past season with 931 points and 2,562 in her four years with the Panthers.
Shane Slate, the longtime head coach at North Surry, will be the head coach for the West. The Greyhounds were 12-15 last season and 16-13 in 2017-18, but they were 26-6 in 2016-17 and reached the NCHSAA Class 2-A championship before losing to Clinton. Slate also helped lead the Greyhounds to NCHSAA Class 2-A volleyball championship titles in 2009 and 2012.
The East-West All-Star boys and girls games are for recently graduated seniors. The East-West All-Star girls game will be July 15 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
