FAYETTEVILLE — The Winston-Salem Dash scored six runs in the top of the first, then had to hold on for dear life in a 7-5 Carolina League win over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Tuesday night at Segra Stadium.
The Dash did the bulk of their early damage against Woodpeckers starter J.P. France. France, a right-hander, allowed five runs in the first, although only three of them were earned. He was pulled after two-thirds of an inning.
Carlos Perez of the Dash reached on an error by Woodpeckers first baseman Colton Shaver, with Zach Remillard scoring, Steele Walker advancing to third and Jameson Fisher moving to second. J.J. Munro followed with a grand slam, his fourth homer of the season, and the Dash had a 5-0 lead. Jordan George made it back-to-back homers. connecting for his third of the season, a shot to right center, and the score was 6-0.
The Woodpeckers responded with three runs in the home half of the first. Marty Costes connected for a three-run homer off Dash starter John Parke. Parke, a left-hander, settled down after the first, allowing only one more run over 51/3 innings.
The Dash took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but got in serious trouble by walking four consecutive Woodpeckers. Jose Nin was able to get the last out and pick up his fifth save of the season. Parke got the win, improving his season record to 3-2.
The Dash has today off, and will begin a four-game home series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Thursday. First pitch of the series opener is set for 7 p.m.
