Winston-Salem State scored three runs in the top of the first, and pitcher Erica Davis did the rest as the Rams won 3-0 on Thursday against West Virginia State in the first round of the Atlantic Region playoffs in West Virginia.
Davis, who improved to 15-7, pitched all seven innings and allowed four hits with one strikeout and one walk.
The seventh-seeded Rams (34-11) did all their scoring in the first inning. Alleigh Himes had an RBI single, and Shauntaja Dedecker had two RBIs on a double to give the Rams a 3-0 lead. Also picking up hits for the Rams were Daijah Chambers and Kortney Thomas.
West Virginia State, the No. 2 seed, fell to 33-16 on the season.
The Rams will play again on Friday at 11 a.m. in the second round.
This is the first time in the last 17 years that the Rams won a first-round game in the playoffs.
