The Carolina Thunderbirds exploded for four goals in the second period on Saturday night on their way to a 4-2 win over the Watertown Wolves at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex.

The win for the first-place Thunderbirds was their Federal Hockey League record 24th straight victory.

The Thunderbirds improved to 33-3 on the season and the Wolves fell to 13-18, losing their fourth in a row.

Josh Pietrantonio scored first early in the second period and Jiri Pargac’s goal 10 minutes later made the score 2-0. Viktor Grebennikov scored just 12 seconds after Pargac’s goal to make it 3-0. Jay Kenney scored to make it 4-0 with his goal being assisted by Michael Bunn and Joe Cangelosi.

The Wolves cut the margin to 4-1 with a goal from Justin Portillo later in the second period.

The Wolves scored the only goal in the third period thanks to Kyle Powell, with an assist credited to Portillo.

Goalie Jared Rutledge faced 57 shots and made 53 saves. Henry Dill made 21 saves for the Thunderbirds.

The teams will complete their three-game series today at 4 p.m. in the Annex.
