WINSTON-SALEM August 7, 1935 - Jan. 6, 2019 Charles Parker Umstead, 83, died on January 6, 2019 after a brief illness with cancer. Born in Durham, NC on August 7, 1935, he was the only child of the late Eleanor Parker and Philip Macon Umstead. He graduated from Durham High School in 1953 and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957. Parker was a certified public accountant and spent his career in business and accounting. A selfless and godly man, Parker was devoted to loving others and caring for those in need through countless ministries. All who knew him, especially his family, will miss his bright eyes and beautiful smile. He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Linda Gray Talbert Umstead, and his children Ann Umstead Bridges (Grant), Leigh Umstead Cortesis (Dino), Charles Parker Umstead, Jr. (Caroline) and Sarah Umstead Merriman (David). He is also survived by ten beloved grandchildren: Kate Umstead Cotton, Taylor Edward Jackson, Patricia Ann Jackson, Charles Parker Umstead, III, Elizabeth Calloway Umstead, Christopher Turner Umstead, Caroline Carrington Umstead, Sarah Parker Umstead Merriman, David Morrison Merriman, Jr. and Philip Macon Merriman. A celebration of life will be held at Reynolda Church, 2200 Reynolda Road, Wintson-Salem, NC 27106 on Friday, January 11 at 2 pm, with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministries, Samaritan Ministries and Reynolda Church.
