WALNUT COVE November 14, 1943 - December 7, 2018 Mr. Jerry Wayne Hairston Sr., 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 7, 2018 at his home in Walnut Cove, North Carolina following a period of declining health. He will be lovingly remembered as a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who devoted his life to the well-being of his family. Jerry was born November 14, 1943 in Stokes County, North Carolina. He was the younger of two sons born to Mr. Joe Hillery Hairston and Mrs. Annie Elizabeth Hairston. Upon graduating in 1962 from London High School in Walnut Cove, Jerry enrolled at A&T State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology in 1966 and a Master of Science Degree in Biology in1971. In 1983, he enrolled at Appalachian State University where he earned an Educational Specialist Degree in 1986. Mr. Hairston began his career in 1966 as a Biology teacher at Madison-Mayodan High School in Rockingham County. He was hired in 1970 as a Science teacher at Kiser Middle School in Gilford County. He advanced through the Guilford County School System as an Assistant Principal at Gillespi High School from 1978-1980; an Assistant Principal at Irvin Park High School from 1980-1981; and an Assistant Principal at Jackson Middle School from 1982-1989. He was appointed Principal at Jackson Middle School and served from 1989 -1994. In 1994 Mr. Hairston was appointed Principal at T. Wingate Andrews High School where he served until his retirement in 2002. Mr. Hairston joined Saint Mary's United Methodist Church as a child and served faithfully in Sunday School and with numerous seasonal programs of the church until he entered college and moved from the community. Upon returning to the community he resumed his service at his home church. He served as past chair of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee and the Church Council. He was also a Steward, a member of the Board of Trustees, and a member of the United Methodist Men. Mr. Hairston was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sharon H. Hairston, a son, Mr. Jerry Wayne (Ursula Baker) Hairston, Jr. and three grandchildren: Niayla Elise Hairston, Sabe Alexander Hairston, and Lillie Vaughn Hairston; a brother, Dr. Edward E. (Marian Anderson) Hairston; three aunts: Mrs. Mary Catherine Foy of Winston-Salem, NC. and Mrs. Margie Hairston of Walnut Cove, NC, an uncle, Mr. Ernest (Dorothy Lewis) Hairston of Berlin, Maryland; a step-son, Brian Scott Hairston and three step-grandchildren: Cambrian Cole Hairston, Jordan Desai Hairston, and Peyton J. Hairston. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Mr. and Mrs. Frank (Mary H.) Hairston. Other survivors include six nephews, one niece, and numerous cousins. The family will receive friends from 11:00-12:00 p.m. Saturday, December 15th at Rising Star Baptist Church, 915 Windmill Street, Walnut Cove, NC 27052. Funeral service will follow at 12:00.
