A Winston-Salem man died Wednesday after he was seriously injured in a traffic crash on Interstate 40 in Iredell County, authorities said.

Ward Beecher Miller, 65, died at the scene, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

The incident happened about 2:20 p.m. when a 2003 Lexus was stopped in the right lane near the highway's 156 and 155 mile markers, the highway patrol said. The westbound traffic had stopped because of a brushfire beside the highway.

A 2001 Peterbilt tractor-trailer swerved in an attempt to avoid the stopped traffic, but struck the Lexus, which Miller had been driving, the highway patrol said. The tractor-trailer then also hit a Chevrolet pickup. The Chevrolet then was pushed into a 2013 Kenworth tractor-trailer.

A passenger in the Lexus and the driver of the Chevrolet were taken to the hospital by emergency medical technicians, the highway patrol said.

The highway patrol is investigating the crash.

Ward Miller was the cousin of the Rev. Daniel Simmons Jr., who was among the nine people killed in a June 2015 mass shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.

Miller, a native of Charleston, was a retired senior vice president at NewBridge Bank in Winston-Salem.
