Memorial Day Carolina Field of Honor

Veterans Day is Sunday, Nov. 11. The following activities are planned in observance of the holiday:

  • The Mountain View Gardeners Garden Club and Dr. John L. Gravitte are sponsoring Mount Airy’s first Blue Star Memorial Highway. The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony at First Presbyterian Church, 326 S. Main St., Mount Airy at 3 p.m. Friday. The Blue Star Memorial Marker unveiling will immediately follow at Lowry Park at the intersection of Main Street and W. Pine Street, officially dedicating Highway 89 as a Blue Star Memorial Highway.
  • The Triad Vietnam Veterans Association will have its annual Veterans Day parade at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Winston-Salem. The parade will begin at Fourth and Broad streets, go east on Fourth Street to Liberty Street to Corpening Plaza.
  • Harry’s Vets will have refreshments and gift bags honoring veterans after the Veterans Day Parade Saturday. It will be from noon to 4 p.m. at 897 Peters Creek Parkway. Proof of service is required.
  • Forsyth Court Independent Living Retirement Community, 2945 Reynolda Road, will honor veterans at 1 p.m. Saturday. A color guard from the Mount Tabor High School JROTC will honor veterans. A highlight will be Forsyth Court’s Wall of Honor which honors residents of Forsyth Court who are veterans.
  • St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 810 N. Highland Ave., will observe Veterans Day at its 11 a.m. service Sunday. The speaker will be the Rev. Capt. Ralph Botte, a U.S. Army Reserve chaplain. A meal will be served following the service.
  • Triad Field of Honor at Triad Park, 9652 W. Market St., Kernersville, will have a special program commemorating the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day at 2 p.m. Sunday.
  • K&W Cafeterias will offer all veterans, active-duty and military personnel, a complimentary meal from 11 a.m. to closing Monday. The meal includes choice of entrée, two vegetables, bread and beverage. Military ID or proof of military service will be required. This offer will be available to dine-in or take-out customers.
  • The Yadkin County Veterans Council will present a veterans program at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Yadkin County Park, behind the YMCA, 6540 Service Road, Yadkinville.
  • The Winston Salem Rescue Mission will hold its annual Veterans Day service at 7 p.m. Monday at its New Life Center, 718 N. Trade St. The speaker will be Lt. Col. John T. Cudar of the Charlotte Air National Guard.
  • Offices of the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County will be closed Monday.
  • Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools will be closed Monday.
  • Yards waste cart collection will be postponed one day. There will be no change to garbage and recycling collection.
