A section of Hawthorne Road between West Academy Street and Elizabeth Avenue has closed because of a broken water main.

Crews from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities Department are on the scene doing emergency repairs.

“A six-inch water main has broken and has caused a sinkhole so they need to close the road for safety reasons,” said Gale Ketteler, public information officer for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities Department.

The repairs are expected to be complete by 10 p.m.

Detours are posted, and drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes.
