Fayetteville police are awaiting positive identification of the victims of a weekend crash, one of whom is believed to be a football player at Winston-Salem State University.

Tina Ward, the mother of Johnathan Gilmore, told the Winston-Salem Journal Sunday that her son died in the car crash in Fayetteville on Saturday. Gilmore of Hope Mills was a freshman tight end for the Winston-Salem State Rams.

The Fayetteville Police Department's traffic unit is investigating the crash, said Sgt. Shawn Strepay, a spokesman with the department.
