Fayetteville police are awaiting positive identification of the victims of a weekend crash, one of whom is believed to be a football player at Winston-Salem State University.
Tina Ward, the mother of Johnathan Gilmore, told the Winston-Salem Journal Sunday that her son died in the car crash in Fayetteville on Saturday. Gilmore of Hope Mills was a freshman tight end for the Winston-Salem State Rams.
The Fayetteville Police Department's traffic unit is investigating the crash, said Sgt. Shawn Strepay, a spokesman with the department.
"Because of the severity of the crash, the bodies were sent to the (N.C.) Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for identification," Strepay said.
Strepay acknowledged that Ward has said that her son died in the crash. However, Fayetteville police are awaiting an medical examiner to identify the victims of the crash, Strepay said.
