The Confederate Soldiers Monument at the corner of Fourth and Liberty streets has been vandalizedĀ in downtown Winston-Salem.
The words āCowards & Traitorsā were written in what looks like a black marker underneath the inscription on the statue marking the October 1905 date that it was erected. It's unclear when the vandalism took place.
A dispatcher with the Winston-Salem Police Department said Tuesday that an officer will be sent out to take a look at the statue.
In August 2017, someone sprayed black paint on at least two sides of the statue. The vandal or vandals painted words on two sides of the statue near its base. Black paint also partially covered the motto, "Our Confederate Dead." In that vandalism, police cleaned all of the writing and most of the paint from the statue.
In both incidents, the Confederate soldier on top of the monument wasnāt damaged.
