GREENSBORO — A Food Lion security guard who was shot Saturday night has died.

According to a police news release, Anthony Charles Smith, 51, of Winston-Salem, was shot around 7:15 p.m. by a black man described as light-skinned, heavy-set, in his early 30s, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, last seen wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt, black pants, a black hat, and Nike sneakers. He was last seen fleeing on foot southbound on South English Street from the scene.

Smith was employed by Guard One security company and was working in the capacity of security guard at the Food Lion grocery store at the time of the shooting. He was inside of the store when he was confronted by the shooter and sustained the gunshot wound, according to the release.

At the time of the shooting, numerous frightened store customers fled prior to police arrival. Investigators are asking any persons that were inside of the store between 7 and 7:30 p.m. to please either call Crimestoppers (336) 373-1000 or Detective A.R. Hinson (336) 574-4004.

Mr. Smith’s autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The investigation is ongoing.
