A self-inflicted gunshot could have killed a 20-year-old man who died on Memorial Day, Winston-Salem police said in a news release Tuesday.

Winston-Salem police said evidence gathered and a witness statement indicate that the man shot himself at Old Town Park, but investigators are still trying to figure out whether the shooting was intentional or accidental, the news release said.

Police have not released the man's name. Winston-Salem police received a call about the shooting at the park about 6 p.m. on Memorial Day. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Several hundred people were at the park at 4550 Shattalon Drive for the holiday, which police said is not unusual.

Winston-Salem police said no further determination will be made about the man's death until the N.C. Medical Examiner's Office completes an autopsy.
