Greensboro’s popular cheesecake shop, Cheesecakes by Alex, is coming to Winston-Salem.
Owner Alex Amoroso said he has signed a letter of intent for the former art studio space at 625 N. Trade St. in the Downtown Arts District, just down the block from Sweet Potatoes restaurant and across the street from Finnigan’s Wake.
Amoroso said he will be doing extensive renovation to the space but hopes to open by Valentine’s Day 2020. “We’ll take possession in October and start the design,” he said. “We pretty much have to gut the space and start over.”
Once it’s finished, he said, it will be fairly similar to his original location at 315 S. Elm St. in downtown Greensboro. The 3,200-square-foot space on Trade Street is close in size to the Greensboro space, Amoroso said. “We will have windows looking into the kitchen and we will basically try to mirror what we have in Greensboro,” he said.
The cheescakes will be baked in Greensboro, he said. “But all the daily offerings — all the pastries will be baked in Winston-Salem.” That includes muffins, scones, brownies and croissants.
The new space also will have a full coffee bar and a selection of ice cream.
Cheesecakes by Alex has been in business since 2002, and has gained a wide following throughout the Triad. It now offers 24 different flavors of cheesecake, including sugar-free and gluten-free cakes.
Amoroso said he has talked about opening a location in Winston-Salem for years, and when the space on Trade became available, it seemed like a good time to move. “The business has been growing. And Winston is really where we need to go,” he said. “We have a big clientele from Winston. And I love that Trade Street area.”
