(Lexington, NC) -- The Lexington Farmers Market at the Depot will kick off the 2020 market season with Opening Day on Saturday, May 2. Shoppers have two ways to purchase local foods this year. They can shop inside the Depot at 129 S. Railroad Street from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. every Saturday between May 2 and October 10. Or they can participate in a new drive-thru pickup lane for pre-orders only.
“We know that not everyone feels safe shopping in public right now, and we want to ensure that everyone has the same access to fresh local produce, meats, and other foods,” said Kivi Miller, president of the Lexington Farmers Market. To participate in the new drive-thru lane, shoppers must reserve a pick-up time on the farmers market website at https://www.lexingtonfarmersmarketnc.com/preorder. Then they can place orders with participating vendors. All orders must be pre-paid. The drive-thru lane will be at the south end of the Depot, and drivers should approach from E. 3rd Avenue.
Shoppers who come inside the Depot will find a new layout and procedures to promote social distancing and other precautions recommended by public health agencies. “We’ve eliminated the center aisle of booths in the Depot to create more room for social distancing,” said Miller. “We’ve also required vendors to keep all of their products out of reach. We know many people like to sort through the produce themselves, but we aren’t allowing that right now,” said Miller.
Customers will point to what they want and the vendors will place the items in bags. Shoppers will also find other common safety procedures in place at the Depot including floor markings that are six feet apart, limiting the number of shoppers, and the availability of hand sanitizer.
“For now, we are closing the southern entrance to the Depot so we can more easily track how many people are shopping at a time,” said Miller. Customers should enter the market at the north end of the Depot, where the murals are. A full list of the new guidelines for shoppers can be found on the farmers market’s website at https://lexingtonfarmersmarketnc.com or on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/lexingtonfarmersmarketnc.
Farmers markets are considered essential businesses similar to grocery stores in Governor Cooper’s executive orders on the coronavirus.
