On a weekend when most of the eyes of the ACC are looking forward into a new era of the conference -- what with Pitt playing at N.C. State, Miami at Syracuse and Duke at Notre Dame -- I'll play the iconoclast and look backward.

Wake will play one of its oldest rivals tomorrow when North Carolina comes calling to Winston-Salem, which, unfortunately, is no longer a guaranteed occasion since the ACC turned to an unbalanced schedule in 2004-05. The two have played 220 times since first meeting in 1910-11 (with UNC holding a 155-65 edge). But they've played only 11 times over the past nine seasons, which, along with N.C. State and Duke no longer guaranteed a home-and-away series, is my greatest regret of all the changes the league has undergone in recent seasons.
