Come August I will complete my 34th year at the Winston-Salem Journal. People who know me are amazed I've lasted this long without getting run out of town. The better they know me, the more amazed they are.
There's a downside to such longevity, the most obvious of which is it means you're no longer a spring chicken. But there's good that comes from it as well. For instance, I've accrued a number of weeks of vacation, though the caveat there is the bulk of it needs to be taken between May and August -- or from the time the basketball finally stops bouncing and all the issues from the season are addressed until the football is snapped for the first preseason practice in August.
