Jamie Hill has been pleased with her progress at track practice, but she knows there’s still a lot to learn in a short amount of time.

Hill, a senior at Winston-Salem Prep, is running competitively for the first time.

“I needed something to do,” Hill said. “Practice has been good but I still need to get better. Practice is long and hard. We have to do stuff I haven’t done before. I have to learn a lot.”

Hill will be competing in the 100 and 200 along with the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. With only six girls on the team, she expects to run in every event. She said the most difficult challenge she faces is learning how to start out of the blocks.

“I didn’t know how to do it,” Hill said. “It’s been really difficult going off the blocks. Sometimes I push off with the wrong foot when I’m in the blocks.”

Relays are her favorite events.

“They are not that long,” she said. “The 4x2 is my best. It’s easier. The other feels longer than that one feels. Passing the baton in relays is hard. When we pass it we have to say ‘go’ so the next person will have their hand out. I almost dropped it once but I caught it just in time.”

Although she has yet to practice the 200, her confidence level for that event is high.

“Even though I haven’t practiced it I think I’ll do good,” Hill said. “I will go out fast.”

Hill said there’s one thing that frustrates her the most in practice.“I get frustrated when the others don’t listen in practice,” she said. “Coach (Tyrone) Holman has to keep repeating himself over and over.”

She said the team has a routine before meets. “We gather around and say ‘we can win, we can.” Hill said. “We always pray. We joke together.”

She also played right side hitter the past two seasons on the Phoenix volleyball team.

“It was the first sport I had ever done,” Hill said. “I always got nervous before I played. I don’t why. Then I would say OK, I’m gonna go out and do this and I wasn’t nervous no more. I think track will be just like volleyball.”
