‘Variations’ explores complex themes

Intellectual prowess, scholarship and achievement provide no defense against illness and death. The realization of our worst fears is often the very thing that destroys the distance between people. Without vulnerability there is no intimacy.

These are just a few of the themes that are explored with inventiveness and skill in Moises Kaufman’s “33 Variations,” which opened Thursday night at Hanesbrands Theatre. Steve Umberger directs the Festival Stage of Winston-Salem production.
