Winston-Salem has been trying for years to shake its history as the state’s red-headed stepchild when it comes to its standing among North Carolina’s major cities. Geography and politics have played a part over the years, starting perhaps with being left off the main railroad line, first in the 1850's and more recently with plans for high-speed passenger service.

Losing the Piedmont Triad International Airport to Greensboro was a blow. And the decision in 2005 by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget to split the Triad into two Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) effectively cut Winston-Salem out of the economic triangle that today includes the Raleigh-Durham area, Charlotte and Greensboro-High Point.
