The word legacy seems inadequate when describing all the good that is being done to prevent serious injuries among student athletes in the name of Matthew Gfeller. The Matthew Gfeller Foundation, created by the former high-school football player’s parents after his tragic death in 2008, has reached thousands with its message about the dangers of youth sport-related injuries.

Early this month, the foundation paid for all certified athletic trainers in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system to attend the second Biannual Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Neurotrauma Symposium at UNC-Chapel Hill, the Journal’s Arika Herron reported. The symposium provides physicians, trainers, therapists and other health-care professionals with the latest information about sport-related neurotraumatic injuries.
