The Veterans Affairs regional office in Winston-Salem has reduced its backlog of disability-compensation claims by 9,935 since March 2013, a VA official said Monday. However, its backlog of appeals from claims that VA officials denied increased slightly during the past year.

The local office had a backlog of 19,452 cases last month, which is down from the 29,387 in March 2013, or about 34 percent, said William Meadows, a spokesman for the office. There was a backlog of 8,246 appeals in March 2014, which represents a 0.05 percent increase from the 8,197 backlogged appeals from March 2013, he said.
