A pickup got stuck Tuesday night in a sinkhole in the parking lot off Spruce Street near the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts. No one was injured.

Garrett LaFleur of Winston-Salem said he returned to the parking lot shortly after 8 p.m. and discovered that his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado was stuck in the sinkhole. The sinkhole was formed by a corroded water pipe that leaked under a parking space, Winston-Salem police said.

A crew removed the pickup from the sinkhole, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

LaFleur said that his vehicle was damaged, but he was uncertain about the extent of the damage.

“It’s just bad luck,” LaFleur said. “It could have happened to anyone anywhere.”

As a precaution, the section of parking lot where the sinkhole happened will be closed Wednesday, said Ron Smith, the director of facilities and maintenance for the Rhodes Center for the Arts.

“We have to get this taken care of,” Smith said of the sinkhole.
