Chief retiring UPDATE: Winston-Salem police chief to retire

Scott Cunningham, who started in 2008 as the chief of the Winston-Salem Police Department, plans to retire in June. He is 55.

Under Cunningham, several changes took place: police beats were rescheduled so that the same officers worked the same neighborhoods more often; the city took on the responsibilities of school resource officers; and complaints filed by residents about police service decreased by about 30 percent, according to city statistics.
