Dianna Lightfoot of Winston-Salem has been devastated by the firestorm of questions since her appointment to head the N.C. Division of Childhood Development and Early Education earlier this week, according to her mother, Betty Phillips.

Lightfoot, 61, withdrew from the position Thursday after news reports that a nonprofit she runs has questioned the value of early childhood education and pre-K programs. She declined to comment for this story.
