Never mind that in 1965, Karen Parker was the first black woman to get an undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill. Parker hardly thought about it when she was there.

"I was well into my senior year when I realized — well, nobody could come up with anybody else," meaning any other black woman who had graduated from the university, said Parker, a retired copy editor whose career included 13 years at the Winston-Salem Journal.
