Krispy Kreme ‘poison pill’ seeks to prevent takeover

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc.’s board of directors adopted Tuesday a new “poison pill” strategy as a potential deterrent to a hostile takeover bid by an individual or group wanting more than a 5 percent ownership stake.

Speculation of a potential offer for Krispy Kreme has surfaced in recent weeks, in part because management has done a remarkable job of bringing the company back from the corporate abyss to sustainable profitability. It is on pace for a third consecutive profitable year.
