Wanda Merschel, a four-term member of the Winston-Salem City Council, will not run for re-election.

Her planned retirement from public office, which comes after her husband retired from professional life, opens the door wider for real-estate agent Jeff MacIntosh, a Democrat. He announced recently that he wants the Northwest Ward seat if Merschel, also a Democrat, does not run again.
