Teenage smoking declined for the fifth consecutive year during 2012, falling under 18 percent for the first time, according to the annual Monitoring the Future study released today.

The smoking rate was at 17.1 percent for 12th-graders, the lowest in the 38-year history of the study, which is conducted by University of Michigan researchers. The study measures tobacco usage over a 30-day period.
