City panel supports amendment vs SCOTUS ruling

Winston-Salem is on track to join several other North Carolina cities that support – even if symbolically – an amendment to the Constitution reversing the effects of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allowed unlimited amounts of corporate and union money in elections.

The general-government committee of the Winston-Salem City Council on Tuesday recommended a resolution that opposes the high court’s ruling – known as Citizens United – which ended a ban that prevented corporations and unions from making independent expenditures and from financing electioneering communications as long as these organizations did not coordinate with the campaign.
