Mary Martin Niepold’s mother and sister both had breast cancer, so Niepold knew she was at risk to develop the disease. Still, she says, receiving the diagnosis in December 2011 at the age of 70 was a shock.
Thankfully, Niepold – a senior lecturer of journalism and instructor of three writing courses at Wake Forest University – had a strong network of loved ones to surround her following the diagnosis.
