Winston-Salem Police Chief Scott Cunningham said Wednesday that he stands by his department’s original conclusion that state Rep. Larry Womble caused the December 2011 car crash that killed a city man.

Womble, a nine-term state legislator, was charged in May with misdemeanor death by vehicle in the Dec. 2 death of David Allen Carmichael, 54, a waiter and bartender. Police said at the time that Womble’s eastbound car crossed the centerline of Reynolds Park Road and crashed into Carmichael’s.
