A 48-year-old Danville, Va., man has died after being shot multiple times early Thursday morning following a confrontation with trespassing suspects on his Rocklawn Place property, according to police.

The victim has been identified as Bennie Wesley Sigmon of the residence, police said Thursday morning. The home was in the 2000 block of Rocklawn Place, reports the Danville Register and Bee.

Officers responded to a call on Rocklawn Place of someone being shot at about 4:20 a.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Danville Police Department.

Police found the victim in his driveway. He was taken to Danville Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly before 7 a.m.

“It was reported to police that the man went outside to confront three subjects who were trespassing on his property,” the news release stated. “The victim confronted the suspects and one of the them produced a handgun and shot the victim multiple times.”

Police say the suspects fled the scene; one on foot and two in a station wagon. The suspects were described as men wearing dark hoodies.

The Danville Police Department is investigating. The body will be sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for an autopsy scheduled for Friday morning.
