Heavy equipment is seen preparing the site of a new building for Ashley Furniture outside of Advance in mid-August. Ashley trailers are in the background, backed up to the former RJR building which currently serves Ashley for offices and temporary warehousing. The furniture manufacturer is adding 1.1 million square feet to the existing building, creating what they term a "Superplant" for manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution.

North Carolina remains one of the nation’s most economically challenged states, with its unemployment rate of 8.7 percent in August still above the level before the economic downturn began in earnest in December 2008.
However, a recent Wells Fargo Securities report on the N.C. economy found several silver linings in the cloudy short-term outlook.
