Winston-Salem area’s high-tech ranking falls in national survey

The coming and going of the Dell Inc. plant continue to haunt the Winston-Salem metropolitan statistical area like a phantom limb when it comes to its high-tech ranking among the nation’s largest metro areas.

The Winston-Salem area fell 10 spots to 174th in the Milken Institute’s 2012 ranking of the 370 best-performing metro areas. The rankings by the California research group were released Thursday.
